Leather Dye Dosage Estimator
Mix the right amount of dye for the area and number of coats.
Tool Operation Area
Estimates dye volume from surface area, dye type, coat count and leather absorbency, including thinner ratio for spirit dyes.
How It Works
- A base consumption figure per square decimetre is assigned to each dye family, measured on unfinished vegetable-tanned leather.
- That base is scaled by how thirsty your leather is.
- Multiplying by the number of coats gives raw volume; later coats use less, which the loss allowance absorbs.
- Applicator loss covers dye held in the dauber, wool ball or airbrush cup.

How to Use
- 1Enter the total area including edges and any wrap-around flesh side you will dye.
- 2Choose the dye family printed on the bottle.
- 3Mix only the first-coat volume if you are colour-testing, then mix the rest to the same ratio.
- 4Apply thin, overlapping coats rather than one heavy pass.
FAQ
Why mix more than one coat at a time?
Batch-to-batch mixing shifts the shade. Mix the full amount so every coat matches.
Should I dilute the dye?
A 1:1 dilution for the first coat gives far more even colour on vegetable-tanned leather.
Does this include edge paint?
No — edge coat is a separate product. Use the Edge Finishing Timer for edge work.
How long between coats?
Until the surface is dry to the touch, typically 20-40 minutes for spirit dye.
