Stitching Thread Length Calculator

Work out how much waxed thread a saddle-stitched seam really needs.

Tool Operation Area

Estimates the total waxed thread length for a saddle stitch from seam length, pricking iron pitch, leather thickness and ply count, including a waste allowance for knots and tails.

How It Works

  • The number of stitch holes is the seam length divided by the iron pitch, plus one for the closing hole.
  • Every stitch consumes the pitch distance on the surface plus roughly twice the leather stack thickness while crossing the hole.
  • A saddle stitch uses two needles, so the thread travels the seam twice; a single-needle stitch travels it once.
  • A tail allowance of about 12 cm per needle covers threading, backstitching and finishing, then the waste percentage adds a safety margin.

How to Use

  1. 1Measure the finished seam along the stitch line, not along the edge of the panel.
  2. 2Enter your pricking iron pitch — it is stamped on the tool (e.g. 3.0, 3.38, 3.85 mm).
  3. 3Enter the total thickness of all layers the needle passes through.
  4. 4Choose saddle stitch for hand sewing with two needles.
  5. 5Read the highlighted total: that is the length of thread to cut before you start.

FAQ

Why is the classic 'four times seam length' rule not enough?

That rule ignores leather thickness. On a 5 mm stack the thread spends a lot of length inside the holes, so a fixed multiplier under-estimates badly.

What waste allowance should I use?

10-15% for flat seams, 20% or more for curved gussets and thick stacks where the thread wanders.

Does thread thickness change the result?

Barely. Thread diameter affects hole friction, not path length, so the same number works for 0.45 mm and 0.6 mm thread.

Can I use it for machine stitching?

Yes — choose single needle, and remember the bobbin consumes a similar length underneath.
