Cutting Waste Calculator

Measure how efficiently your layout uses a hide.

Tool Operation Area

Compares the total pattern area actually used against the original hide area to give a real utilisation and loss rate, plus a cost of the wasted leather.

How It Works

  • Utilisation is simply pattern area divided by hide area.
  • Offcuts that are large enough for small goods (card slots, keepers, tabs) are counted separately as recoverable material.
  • True waste is what is left after both, which is the number that actually costs you money.
  • Multiplying waste area by your hide price shows the cash impact of a poor layout.
hide 100% = pattern + reusable offcuts + waste

How to Use

  1. 1Measure or read the hide area from the supplier's stamp (usually in sq ft or dm²).
  2. 2Add up the area of every pattern piece you cut from that hide.
  3. 3Estimate the offcuts you will genuinely keep for small parts.
  4. 4Compare runs to see whether re-nesting your pattern is worth the effort.

FAQ

What is a realistic utilisation rate?

60-75% for a full hide with mixed shapes; 85%+ only for small rectangular goods.

Are shoulder and belly areas counted?

Yes — that is why the loss rate on a full hide is always higher than on a pre-cut panel.

How do I lower waste?

Nest large panels first along the backbone, then fill the belly with small parts and keepers.
