Stitch Hole Spacing Calculator

Balance stitch holes across an edge with even end margins.

Tool Operation Area

Given an edge length and iron tooth pitch, it finds the hole count that keeps end margins symmetrical, plus the adjusted pitch needed for a perfectly even line.

How It Works

  • The stitch line is the edge length minus the two end margins.
  • Dividing that usable line by the tooth pitch and rounding gives the whole number of gaps that fits best.
  • Hole count is always gaps + 1, because both ends carry a hole.
  • The adjusted pitch spreads the tiny rounding error across all gaps so no single stitch looks stretched.

How to Use

  1. 1Measure the exact edge the stitch line runs along.
  2. 2Enter the pitch stamped on your pricking iron.
  3. 3Set the smallest end margin you accept — 3-5 mm is typical.
  4. 4Punch the first and last hole at the calculated margin, then fill in between.

FAQ

Why not just start at one end and punch until I run out?

You end with an odd short gap at the far corner, which is the most visible part of the seam.

How much can I stretch the pitch?

Up to about 5% is invisible. Beyond that, change the margin instead.

Does this work around corners?

Run it per straight segment and place a dedicated hole in each corner.

Which end margin looks best?

Match it to your edge distance so the stitch line looks like a rectangle with equal borders.
