About Us
Why this site exists
Leatherwork is a craft of small numbers. How much thread should you cut? How many holes fit along that edge? Will a hide of this size really cover the pattern? Most makers work these out on scrap paper, and most makers get them wrong at least once — usually after the leather has already been cut.
The Leather Bench collects the arithmetic of the craft into twelve focused tools. Each one does a single job, explains the reasoning behind its result, and runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored on a server, and no account is ever required.
Who it is for
Hobbyists cutting their first wallet, weekend makers building bags in a spare room, and small independent workshops quoting commissions. The tools use internationally accepted craft units — millimetres, centimetres, ounces, inches, square feet and square decimetres — so a maker in Osaka, Bogotá or Sheffield can use them without translating anything.
What we believe
- Free means free. Every tool is available to everyone, with no paywall, trial period or feature gate.
- No login threshold. You should be able to answer a question in ten seconds without creating an account.
- Explain the maths. A number without reasoning is a guess. Every tool documents how it reaches its result.
- Respect the craft. These tools support skill; they do not replace judgement at the cutting mat.
A note on accuracy
Leather is a natural material. Thickness varies across a hide, absorbency varies between panels, and every maker's hand is different. Our results are careful estimates based on established workshop practice — always test on scrap from the same hide before committing to a finished piece.
