Pattern Scaling Calculator
Resize a pattern accurately and see how area and thread change.
Tool Operation Area
Scales pattern dimensions by ratio or to a target size, and shows the knock-on effect on area, leather use and stitch length.
How It Works
- Linear dimensions multiply by the scale factor, so a 120% pattern is 1.2x wider and taller.
- Area scales by the square of that factor — 120% linear is 144% of the leather.
- Stitch line length scales linearly, so thread need rises in step with the factor.
- Printing at the same percentage reproduces the scaled pattern accurately, provided you disable 'fit to page'.
+-----+ +---------+ | 1x | -> | 1.2x | area = 1.44x +-----+ +---------+
How to Use
- 1Measure the original pattern piece, not the finished product.
- 2Choose percentage mode for a whole-pattern resize, or target mode to hit an exact width.
- 3Print with scaling set to the returned percentage and 'actual size' scaling off.
- 4Verify with a printed test square before cutting leather.
FAQ
Does thickness need to scale too?
Not proportionally, but a much larger bag usually needs one or two ounces heavier leather to hold shape.
Should hardware scale?
No. Keep hardware at real-world sizes and adjust its position manually.
Why is my print slightly off?
Printer drivers apply their own margin scaling. Turn off 'fit to printable area'.
Do seam allowances scale?
They should not — keep a constant allowance and scale only the finished outline.
